1.The setup
In an urban environment 2 cars are driving in loops around certain blocks.
(In a rural environment it should be a loop of about 1/4 mile each.)
* The first car is the camera car.
It contains a fixed camera that frames the windshield and records whatever is visible within these
parameters.
*
The second car is the viewer car. It follows the camera car in a distance of 100 meters.
The viewer car/van is a model with connected seats, so three people can sit in the front row and have
an unobstructed view. They hold a smart device in their hands (an i-phone, i-pad, android phone, etc.)
on which they see, what the car in front of them records in real time. Despite the distance of 100
meters both views (reality and screen) match, because the recording is transmitted via wiFi from
the first to the second car with an adjustable delay that equals the distance of 100 meters at a driving speed
of approx. 30km/h. Once the viewer gets used to the double view and trains his eyes to be able
to see both, he or she notices that certain details don't match.
2.The plot
The piece functions like a short “life film”. Or “live film”. Or both:) It is being shot, acted, directed, edited and watched in real time. The built in delay and the deployment of “additors” (people who are responsible for editing scene changes within seconds) make it possible to include filmic elements that set it apart from watching the footage of a moving surveillance camera. Depending on the location, each loop (including a sub-loop) is about 2-5 minutes - so the whole film is about 15 min. long. The “plot” consists of several scripted scenes, that mostly play with the displacement of either time or space. The 2 cars are looping 3 times around the area always keeping their distance. Certain scenes will develop over time like narratives in movies that jump ahead or back in time through editing. Since everything is live and choreographed on the stage of reality, we incorporated scenes that are somewhat flexible and don’t depend on the ideal circumstances when every second is in view.
3. Technical Requirements
3a. camera car
A video camera connected to a computer which processes and delays the video signal from the camera placed on the dashboard of the camera car (first car) to create the http video stream which isvia WiFi live transmitted to the viewer car.
4b. viewer car
Individual smart devices or single tablet connect to local wireless network to access streaming video streamed by the camera car
5. What is involved?
- a van, a Lincoln Towncar or an old landyacht, to seat as many audience members as possible in the front row.
- a non-descript car to drive around the camera
- 2 drivers for the two vehicles
- at least 8 - 10 volunteers who enact different scenes
- electronic devices (1 laptop (plus one backup device), 2 routers, one or more iPad or other smart tablets) cables and software.
