The Treaty of Ruby Valley signed with the Newe Segobia (Western Shoshone) in 1863 gave certain rights to the United States in the Nevada Territory, now called the state of Nevada where the 10-Acre lot we used as the anchor of our work, is currently registered. The Newe Segobia (Western Shoshone) did not cede land under this treaty. *
In 2006, most of the Western Shoshone tribal councils refused to settle for a payment of $145 million to transfer 25 million acres (101,000 kmĀ²) of their traditional territory to the United States. Newe Segobia (Western Shoshone) are still disputing the terms of this treaty with the federal government.
We acknowledge the past and ongoing violent and exploitative history surrounding settler colonialismĀ and pay respect to the Newe Segobia (Western Shoshone) who were and continue to be the rightful stewards of this land.
