“The Monkey King Thrice Beats the Bony Ghost”

Inspired by the Chinese classics Journey to the West, the story depicts Monk Tripitaka and his three disciples going to the West to acquire the holy Buddhist scriptures. On their way, they meet the Bony Ghost, who intends to take Tripitaka’s life but is afraid of Sun Wukong the Monkey King. As a way to drive a wedge between Tripitaka and the Monkey King, the Bony Ghost transforms herself into a young maiden, an old woman and an old man on three different occasions – all are allegedly killed by the Monkey King. Tripitaka is not aware of the plot and forsakes the Monkey King as his disciples. The Bony Ghost, therefore, is able to capture Tripitaka. Thanks to the prowess of the Monkey King, everyone is kept safe.
