On January 24, 2025 we traveled to Taiwan’s oldest city to attend the annual lantern fest at 普濟殿 Puji Temple in Tainan. The temple and local government agencies had organized a public event to celebrate the lighting ceremony of hundreds of lanterns that fluttered above the narrow streets leading to the temple, which included an outdoor performance by the Su Jun Jing Puppet Troupe 蘇俊穎 木偶劇團 who performed: The Chivalrous Dragon: Sacred Sword and Cursed Blade 天龍遊俠之神劍魔刀.

We were lucky that our friend, actor, director and fellow Fulbright scholar Kim Chen 程鈺婷 had time to travel with us to Tainan to interview Su Jun Jing 蘇俊穎 about the improvisational character of Golden Ray temple performances traditionally performed in the South of Taiwan.

This film features excerpts from their conversation preceding the performance of “The Chivalrous Dragon: Sacred Sword and Cursed Blade”
